How to Apply
The Civil Rights: A Global Perspective global curriculum discusses the following six topics rooted in the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
All applicants must select one of the six topics listed below and create a 2-minute video discussing how the principle relates to you, your experience, and your future:
Love – Love is a word we use often, but true love is active and selfless. Dr. King and the civil rights movement exemplified this by choosing love even in the face of hate and injustice. How does this kind of love shape your life and future?
Conscience – Following your conscience isn’t always easy, but standing up for truth and justice requires courage, even in the face of opposition. Like Dr. King, how has your conscience guided your decisions and shaped your purpose?
Justice – Restorative justice focuses on repairing harm rather than just punishing wrongdoing. It acknowledges people beyond their mistakes and seeks renewal instead of division. How do you embody or aspire to practice justice in this way?
Freedom – Though progress has been made, many still live without true freedom—physically, socially, or emotionally. Dr. King believed denying freedom strips people of their dignity. How do you define freedom, and how does it inspire your actions?
Perseverance – The fight for justice is long and discouraging, yet perseverance pushes us forward. Even Dr. King faced doubt but found strength to continue. How have you demonstrated perseverance in your life?
Hope – Dr. King said, “Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.” Hope allows us to find opportunity in hardship and inspire change. How has hope influenced your journey, and how do you use it to uplift others?
